Cebu Province is the provincial capital of Region 7, an island province that includes three small islets of Bantayan, Mactan, and Camotes. Mainland Cebu extends 122 miles from north to south, and 20 miles as its greatest width, with continuous ranges of rugged hills and mountains with elevation exceeding 3,000 feet at the center of the island. Its highways are parallel to the coastline. Basically, the economic activity is agriculture, having extensive production in corn, coconut, sugarcane, rice, maguey, tobacco and poultry. Cement manufacturing, coal, copper and gold mining, fishing, and commerce are the important industries. With recent developments, tourism has largely contributed to the economy. The province is densely populated as migrants from neighboring regions settle in Cebu to find jobs.
Prior to the arrival of the Europeans, Cebu had considerable contacts with Hinduized Malays and Chinese traders. Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan was the first European to discover the province in March 15, 1521. He was slain by the local chieftain, Lapulapu, and was buried in Mactan island. Cebu is not only historically rich, but also in religious heritage. Old churches and cathedrals made of stone bricks constructed during the Spanish era, scattered throughout the municipalities, are witnesses to this heritage. Fiesta celebrations in honor of patron saints are prevalent. The most celebrated of which is the Fiesta of the Senior Santo Niño, the patron saint of Cebu City.
Regional offices of national government agencies are found in the province. The socio-economic development of the region is planned in Cebu. Cebu City is a key urban city which draws migrants ands provides opportunities for development.
